Overview
Nine square metres nobody sat in
The corner had everything against it: a north-facing window, a dead radiator wall and seven years of ‘we’ll deal with it later’. The clients — two readers, one rescue cat — wanted a spot that would pull them away from the sofa every evening.
We panelled the wall in ink green to hold the gloom instead of fighting it, floated oak shelves for the to-be-read pile, and gave the room one unapologetic colour moment: a marigold armchair in stain-proof velvet.
Approach
Design for the darkest hour
Literally. We did the final lighting test at 9pm in February: a brass pharmacy lamp at shoulder height, a picture light on the artwork, and nothing overhead. The corner now glows like a bookshop window while the rest of the flat winds down.
Storage hides in a window-seat bench; the side table is a vintage find the clients already owned, re-topped in oak to match the shelves.
